Thriving while surviving

Joe & MKI

Team Captain

MARY KATHERINE IBBETSON

I am a mother, a wife, friend, a runner, a mediocre cook, an awful joke teller and a breast cancer survivor.

Prior to being diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer I ran and lifted weights and crunched like crazy. At 39 years old, I was fighting the aging process and wanted to look good in my forties. I was also aware
that regular exercise helped to prevent heart disease, stroke, and cancer. I was healthy and strong, or so I thought.

After being diagnosed, what was I supposed to do? I did it all and got cancer anyway - now what? Sit on the couch...any research that proved that would keep the cancer from returning?
Nope, unfortunately not!

What I did find is research that showed regular exercise reduced recurrence. OK. I also found that exercise actually made me feel better though, admittedly, sometimes it was hard to get started! Fortunately, I had a support network of friends and family who would push me to walk and eventually run. Two months after finishing treatment, I had my fastest run time ever. What a feeling!!!

I am strong and healthy again and doing everything I can to stay that way!

I want everyone to have the support that I had (and still have).

C'mon, lets go for a walk, who knows where it may lead!

"Exorcise your chemotherapy demons with exercise - women who exercise during their cancer experience note less fatigue. This benefit is in addition to the other benefits of exercise; less depression, increased sense of well being and weight loss when done in conjunction with a healthy diet."

-Dr. Cynthia Forsthoff, Oncologist
